What is a breast reduction?

Combining a mastopexy surgery with breast reduction

A breast reduction surgery is a procedure to reduce the size of the breasts by removing fat, tissue and skin. This can help patients who feel uncomfortable with large breasts that may cause pain and discomfort from breasts that are not proportionate to the frame. Reducing the breast size may also help with confidence and self-image, as well as comfort when exercising.

Large breasts can commonly be shapeless or sagging, so your surgeon may recommend the combined procedure of a breast reduction and lift to maximize your surgical results.

Is this an option for you?

Review this information to find out if you are a good candidate for a breast reduction and surgery.

Good candidates:

      • Should be in good overall physical health. Good overall health means that you have no untreated serious illnesses or active infections. Any health conditions should be discussed with your breast surgeon to determine if breast implant surgery is an option.

      • Maintain a stable weight
      • Are non-smokers or will be able to quit smoking for at least 6 weeks before the breast surgery.
      • May be bother by large, sagging breasts

Possible risks associated with breast surgery?

Like any other surgery, there are of course risks associated with choosing to have breast surgery. Being aware of the possible risks will help you to make an informed decision to have your surgery. Anyone can choose to have a breast reduction with lift, but we recommend that you do so after all pregnancies and breastfeeding is complete, and you are at a stable healthy weight.

  • Risks associated with anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Bleeding or hematoma
  • Breast asymmetry or change in shape
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation
  • Potential loss of of nipple and areola (partial or complete)
  • Issues with healing of incisions and/or scarring

Who should not have breast reduction?

Breast surgery may not be an option for you at this time?

Your breast surgeon will give you an honest assessment and let you know if you are a good candidate for breast lift surgery, but if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, are currently ill or have an infection, are very obese or if you have cancer or an abnormal mammogram, you will not be a good candidate for breast lift surgery.

If you plan to become pregnant or are planning to lose weight by changing your lifestyle, you may choose to postpone your breast reduction with lift. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight loss can all change breasts significantly.
