What’s the difference between a Breast Augmentation and a Breast Lift?

Understanding your breast surgery options.

Trying to figure out the best course of action when it comes to any kind of plastic surgery can feel overwhelming at times, but breast surgeries in particular can be even more so due to the many many options you have. You will need to decide on a breast augmentation or a breast lift (or both), what size implants to choose if you opt for a breast augmentation, etc.

Let’s learn about one of the biggest questions when it comes to breast surgeries; what is the difference between a breast augmentation and a breast lift?

11What’s the difference between a Breast Augmentation and a Breast Lift?

Breast Augmentation vs Breast Lift

Wanting to understand the major differences between breast augmentation and breast lift surgery is one of the most common questions surrounding breast surgery, and with good reason! The two surgeries are very very different so it is crucial that patients comprehend exactly what they are and what types of results can be achieved with them.

What can a Breast Augmentation do?

As it alludes to in the name, a breast augmentation augments! The surgery, using an implant (silicone or saline) will add volume to the breast tissue that you already have, increasing the overall size of your breasts.

In addition to overall volume increase, the implant can also add more projection and fullness  to the upper pole of your breast  (the top the breast tissue above the nipple and areola) depending on the implants you choose and if your breasts were sagging or drooping in the first place.

Breast implants alone will not really provide much of a lift. Some, but not all patients can expect a small lift, around 0.5 to 1 cm and sometimes less. It will never be more of a lift than this when the surgery is solely a breast augmentation. This minimal amount of lift is directly related to the projection of the implant that is used in the procedure (higher projection will result in the small amount of lift vs low projection or smaller implants).

If the desired outcome is a more significant lift, then a breast augmentation combined with a breast lift will be required.

What can a Breast Lift do?

In contrast to how a breast augmentation can give upper pole fullness, a breast lift alone will not achieve this effect. A breast lift simply reorients the nipple and areola complex, positioning it into a more aesthetically pleasing position on the chest. This repositioning does not add volume to the upper pole or anywhere else in the breast. It is simply working with the tissue that is already there.

Usually, a good candidate for a breast lift would have nipples that are pointing downward, or sitting below the breast crease. If the only concern is the sagging of the breasts/nipples and not the size of the breasts, then a breast lift can be a great option by itself.

It is important to be aware of the limitations of each surgery when choosing your options in order to manage expectations of your surgical outcomes and ensure satisfaction. Everyone’s body is different, so your consultation will be a great starting point to find out what the treatment plan will be, based on your individual body and desired results.

In the case of breast augmentation vs breast lift, it really just depends on what you want. You may want to have just one of these options, or choose to combine them to achieve exactly what you are looking for.
